Writer/composer/lyrist Kip Dennis chose Comedian/singer JOAN JAFFE
to sell his song “What I’ve Got on You.” Playing
Herald Tribune gossip columnist Azalia (don’t mess with her!). JAFFE
looked the part in a large hat, sack dress, and oversized beads
hung down to her waist as she met her interviewee who she warned: “Don’t
try to be illusive, ‘cus I got my exclusive.” Here was a tour
de force, with clever writing and perfect casting.....well received, and
deservedly so, thanks not only to fine writing, but to strong performances. OFF-BROADWAY
REVIEWS Special
mention going to Joan Jaffe filling the role of Cohan’s Mother...Joan
Jaffe brought her own style into the act with a touch of Merman and a
dash of Channing.
Joan
Jaffe shines in all of her roles, switching accents, wigs and costumes
with the teasing ease of a magician. Joan
Jaffe plays a succession of Anglos, with versatility and great comic abandon. Joan
Jaffe fills a variety of roles amusingly...Jaffe shines in her biggest
role, Mrs. Wallace Warner Howard of Dallas, who meets Juanita at Saks...they
have a wonderful romp.
No fewer than 9 roles are played by Joan Jaffe, mostly to good effect...and
only Jaffe seems to have a trained singing voice.
Joan
Jaffe asserts herself as Alabert’s mother, Mae. Mae personifies
the ironic American Jaffe executes this character with notable dexierity,
resisting the opportunity to overtake the production, as she overtook
Albert’s life. Joan
Jaffe, as Albert’s pushy mother, delivers her irritating comments
with just the right finesse.
